Dental Veneers Portland
Placing dental veneers is a very predictable procedure that will enhance your smile, offering beautiful results without the need for whitening your teeth. What most people don’t know is that there are many different types of veneers. Each indicated for a different situation:
Micro-thin or Ultra-thin Veneers:
These veneers offer the most stunning look and durability of any other type of dental veneers. Because they are so thin, they allow a significant amount of natural light to transmit through them, which translates to life-like beautifully perfect white teeth.
Pros:
- Stunning life -like results
- Minimal tooth structure removal “0.3-0.5mm”
- Preserving the maximum amount of natural tooth
- Great durability and strength
Cons:
- Not indicated for teeth with deep stains
- Not indicated for teeth with significant loss of tooth structure
- Does not work well for teeth with significant cavities
Traditional Veneers: IPS Empress, E.Max Veneers and Conventional Porcelain Veneers
Pros
- Great Durability and strength
- Can be utilized for teeth with deep stains
Cons:
- Removal of significant amount tooth structure required
- Allows for least amount of light transmission through which translates to less life-like appearance
No Prep Veneers: Lumineers, Vivaneers, and DURAthin veneers
Pros
- Minimal to no tooth structure removal required
- Great durability and strength
- No anesthesia in most cases
Cons
- Opaque monotone look with minimal translucency
- Tendency to over-contour teeth “bulbous” or rounded teeth
- Risk of altering bite
- Poor margin “where tooth meets veneer” adaptation
In my opinion, minimal prep dental veneers offer the best combination of stunning life-like esthetics along with conserving tooth structure and good marginal adaptation.
No prep veneers sound good in theory, however, adding more structure to a tooth that doesn’t need it will interfere with the biological adaptation of surrounding gums to teeth and can potentially cause more problems in the long run. Therefore, No-prep Veneers work best for front teeth with spaces.
Traditional veneers have minimal indications at present, however IPS E.Max Veneers in that category are currently the most popular and they can look beautiful.
Keep in mind that there are alternatives to enhancing your smile other than dental Veneers. Composite bonding can offer an immediate, cost effective and more conservative option if you are a good candidate for such treatment. An even more conservative option is in-office teeth whitening such as Zoom.
